Love of the Week

I try to keep these newsletters real; you know that. So in that spirit, let me admit I am finding it particularly difficult today to write breezily about something I just love-lovey-love-dove-love-love.

The headlines are heavy on my heart. Two wars. A stabbing in Charlotte. An assassination.

On days like these, and it seems like there have been too many of them recently, it can feel very daunting to delight over a research finding, a moment of eureka in the classroom, or a heart-warming experience with a student.

On days like these, you can feel like the center is not holding.

But it is. My friends, I know it is. I say that even now, filled with worry and sadness.

It is, because too many of us are waging peace.

Look, there are many ways to wage peace. I have a colleague who teaches business skills to inmates at a prison upstate. A neighbor quit her job at a med spa to join Doctors without Borders.

Those of us “doing” Becoming You in one way or another are waging peace too, by finding our purpose. That matters.

Hurt people hurt people.

Purpose people heal people. Starting with themselves.

Now, I don’t want to overreach here.

But I have seen the life-giving ripple effect of Becoming You more times than I could ever count.

The retiree who finally finds a way to talk to her adult children about values without acrimony and accusations. The working mom who finds a way to reconcile her priorities with her dreams, and live without guilt and anger. The couple that uses the language of The Values Bridge to resolve years of painful conflict.

You know, sometimes my kids get on my back about how much I work. They drop by on a weekend and I’m writing, or they call at 11pm and I’m still at my desk. They fret, they worry, they warn me about burn-out.

I tell them I’ve never been more on fire. “I’m trying to build something,” I say.

Then I cringe, because that sounds so self-important. Yuck.

But on days like today, I am not cringing. I’m hoping.

I’m hoping that in its goal to help each of us find purpose, Becoming You has the potential to be bigger than any of us, and for the good of us all.

So let’s keep waging peace together. I’d love that.

Hate of the Week

There is much not to love in the world this week, but let me offer here a hate that’s not your problem, it’s mine, and better yet, it’s fixable.

I hate that my grandchildren visited from Maine…AND THEN DEPARTED.

I used to wonder why my grandmother would always cry when we left her apartment. I was like, “What’s the matter, you’re seeing us next week! Get over it, oldster!”

Well, this oldster is not getting over anything. But I will see my little munchkins shortly, at Grandparents Day at their school no less, and all will be well again.

The moral of the story is: Hate is almost always a message that something has to change in life, in this case like my grandchildren moving to New York like me traveling north more often.

Hmm of the Week

I don’t know if it’s a function of AI’s rapid encroachment on the job market or how beautiful New York is in September, but the Becoming You Three-Day Intensive starting tomorrow sold out in a hot minute. Yikes! Now, don’t get me wrong, this phenomenon filled me with joy and gratitude, and I cannot wait to meet my new BFFs at the welcome party tonight, but also: Yikes!

How do we handle the growing interest in Becoming You?

One option is that we increase the frequency of New York-based Intensives. That’s an easy yes, and we’ve already scheduled one for October 17-19. It too is filling fast, so if you’re interested, please consider registering here sooner rather than later.

The second option is that I take Becoming You on the road, holding Intensives in other locations, like Boston, or Atlanta, or Los Angeles. Or…you tell me.
