Love of The Week

I just gave a speech to a group of young business women in New York – the Undergraduate Stern Women In Business. It was a spirited crowd, with the kind of hopeful, positive energy that makes you think, “The kids are going to save us all.”

Afterward, I was delighted to chat with a dozen or so audience members who had specific questions or who just wanted to say hello.

Toward the end of the line, there was a woman who said, “I don’t know if you’ll remember me, but I emailed you last year to ask for your help on a presentation I was making about puppy mills.” (I am on the board of Humane World for Animals, and make no secret of my passion for animal protection.)

“Uh-oh,” I thought to myself, then quickly started to explain, “I’m so sorry. I get so many emails –”

She looked perplexed. “No, you answered me!” she said. “You really helped a lot, you gave me a lot of information, and I just wanted to thank you!”

“Oh, thank God!” I said, and we laughed.

Look, I don’t want to make a massive thing out of my little favor and her little thank you, but I kind of do.

Because it reminded me that sometimes the tiniest acts of kindness, even between strangers, never go astray. I love that.

Hate of the Week

“I am good at a lot of things, but I am not great at anything.”

I received that DM the other day, and it made me very sad. Not just for those particular words, but for the messages we exchanged before and afterward, in which it was clear my correspondent was feeling a bit of despair.

One of the central premises of Becoming You is that we are all uniquely equipped for something in this life, some kind of work, but we often have to dig hard to identify our exact aptitudes. That’s why we do so much testing.

That testing takes time. But I promise, you will find out that the world needs you and awaits you. Sometimes life can beat you up and make this assurance hard to believe. It is part of my own life’s work to change your mind. And I don’t hate that at all.
